The iPhone 15 was Apple's switch from Lightning to USB-C, and that change is genuinely relevant to liquid exposure — the two connectors behave differently when damp.

USB-C versus Lightning when wet

Lightning exposes its contacts on the outside of the plug, where they sit directly against any moisture in the port. USB-C recesses its pins inside the connector shell. That difference does not make USB-C waterproof, but it does mean the contacts are less immediately exposed. The rule is unchanged: do not charge a wet port. Corrosion and short circuits remain entirely possible.

The moisture warning still applies

iOS displays a liquid-detection alert on USB-C models just as it did on Lightning. Do not use any override option — wait for the alert to stop appearing on its own. MagSafe and Qi wireless charging remain available and bypass the port completely.

IP68 rating

The iPhone 15 line is rated IP68. As with every model, that is fresh water under laboratory conditions on a new device — seawater, chlorinated water, soap and steam all sit outside the test parameters.

Liquid contact indicator

Inside the SIM tray slot on models that have one. Note that some iPhone 15 units in certain regions are eSIM-only with no physical tray, which removes that quick check — in those cases the indicator is not user-visible and only a technician can assess it.

Cleaning sequence

Case off, exterior blotted dry, Bluetooth off entirely, volume 70–80 percent, grille facing straight down at roughly 45 degrees. Two or three cycles of 30–60 seconds, blotting between each.

Still no built-in eject

iOS has no water-ejection feature on any iPhone including the 15. The function exists on Apple Watch only.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
