When a sound tool won’t fix your speaker
Playing a low-frequency tone clears two things: liquid sitting in the speaker cavity, and loose debris in the grille mesh. If your problem is neither of those, running the tool another twenty times will not change the outcome — and in a few cases it makes things worse. This page is the honest list of when to stop.
Symptoms that are not blockage
Blockage has a signature: sound is muffled but complete. Volume drops, high frequencies go dull, but every part of the audio is still there. If what you hear doesn’t match that description, the cause is mechanical or electrical.
- Buzzing or rattling that scales with volume. Quiet at low volume, severe at high volume. That is a torn diaphragm or a voice coil rubbing against the magnet gap. Vibration makes a tear larger.
- Distortion only in the bass. Voices sound fine, music breaks up. The suspension has failed and the coil is bottoming out on large excursions.
- Total silence on one channel. Blockage never produces silence — it produces quiet. Silence means a disconnected flex cable, a dead amplifier channel, or a failed speaker module.
- Crackling that changes when you flex or tilt the phone. A loose or partially seated connector. This needs the case opened, not a tone.
- Sound cuts in and out during calls but media is fine. That points at the earpiece receiver or audio routing, not the main speaker.
Signs liquid has already caused damage
Water that has dried inside leaves mineral and salt deposits behind. Those deposits conduct, corrode, and insulate — and no amount of vibration removes them.
- The phone got wet more than 48 hours ago and audio never recovered.
- It was salt water, pool water, soda, coffee, juice, or seawater spray. Sugars and salts are far more damaging than the water itself.
- Your Liquid Contact Indicator has tripped. On most iPhones it sits inside the SIM tray slot; on many Android phones it is in the SIM tray or under the back cover. A white sticker that has turned pink or red means liquid reached the internals.
- Green or white powdery residue is visible around any port. That is active corrosion.
- The device is unusually warm, will not charge, or shows a liquid-detection warning that keeps returning.
When running the tool can make things worse
Three situations where you should not use a sound tool at all:
- A visibly torn or punctured speaker mesh. Driving a damaged diaphragm at high excursion enlarges the tear.
- Earbuds or headphones you are wearing. Never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while they are in your ears. Take them out first.
- A phone that is still wet on the outside, or still powered on after heavy submersion. Power it down and dry the exterior before doing anything.
What to do instead
If any of the above matches your situation, stop testing and take these steps:
- Power the device off. Every additional power cycle on a wet board adds risk.
- Do not charge it. Charging a wet device is the most common way a recoverable problem becomes an unrecoverable one.
- Leave it speaker-side down in a dry, moving-air environment. Skip rice — it is a poor desiccant and its starch dust enters the ports.
- Back up your data now if the phone still powers on, before anything degrades further.
- Take it to a repair technician. Ask specifically for an ultrasonic clean and a corrosion inspection, not just a speaker swap — if the board is corroding, a new speaker will fail too.
A realistic expectation
Sound-based ejection works well for its actual use case: recent water exposure and grille debris. It is not a repair for damaged hardware, and no tool that plays audio through a speaker can be. If two or three cycles produce no improvement at all, further cycles will not either — that is the point to stop and get the device looked at.
