Not pocket lint. The earpiece sits against your face during every call, so it collects sebum, sweat residue, makeup, moisturiser and hair. That combination forms a film that is sticky and partly organic — fundamentally different from the dry, loose fibre that blocks a bottom speaker.
Vibration moves loose material. It does not break adhesive bonds, and an oily film is adhesion rather than mechanical wedging. Running cycles on an oil-clogged earpiece produces very little, which is why people often report the tool working on media but not on calls.
Use a soft cleaning putty rather than a stiff adhesive. If it leaves residue on your fingers, it is too soft for this.
A soft dry brush worked along the slot — parallel to it, never into it — lifts loose surface material before the putty engages with the film underneath. Thirty seconds is plenty.
Use lower volume than you would on the main speaker. The earpiece driver is smaller, and it sits close to your ear in normal use. Two cycles is a reasonable limit; if nothing changes, the blockage is the sticky kind and more cycles will not help.
First, whether a screen protector overlaps the slot — a very common cause of quiet calls that looks identical to blockage. Second, whether call volume specifically is turned up, adjusted during an active call rather than in settings.

Blockage produces quiet, never total silence. If there is no sound whatsoever, check that media volume is up, that no Bluetooth device is connected, and that Do Not Disturb is off. If all three are clear, the fault is hardware.
No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.
No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.
Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.
