Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency range where diaphragm travel is greatest.

A fault affecting both directions of a call points somewhere different from one affecting only the speaker. Testing them independently takes two minutes and narrows the cause considerably.

Test each direction separately

  1. Speaker alone. Play a music file or voice memo. If it sounds muffled, the output path is affected.
  2. Microphone alone. Record a voice memo and play it back through headphones. If the recording is quiet or distorted, the input path is affected.
  3. Both together. Make a call and ask the other person specifically whether you sound distant, muffled or normal.

Four possible outcomes, each pointing somewhere different.

Speaker bad, mic fine

Blockage in the speaker grille. This is the ordinary case and acoustic cleaning applies.

Mic bad, speaker fine

Blockage in a microphone pinhole. Importantly, there is no acoustic method for this — a mic has no diaphragm you can drive, so no tone clears it. A soft dry brush across the opening is the limit of safe home cleaning.

Both bad

Usually a single shared event rather than two coincidental faults. Liquid exposure affects both, because the openings are close together at the bottom edge. So does a case that covers both. So does a software audio issue — which is why a restart is worth trying before assuming hardware.

Both fine individually but calls are bad

Then it is not the hardware. Suspect network quality, the calling app, a Bluetooth device holding the audio route, or noise-cancellation processing misbehaving. Test on a different network or with a different app to isolate it.

Which microphone is which

Most phones have two or three: one at the bottom for calls, one near the earpiece for speakerphone and noise cancellation, and often one by the rear camera for video. Different apps use different combinations, which produces confusing symptoms — voice memos fine but calls bad, or the reverse. Record a memo, then a video, then make a call; whichever fails identifies the affected mic.

Handling mic openings

A microphone port is a pinhole behind extremely fine mesh, far more fragile than a speaker grille. Nothing sharp, nothing wet, no compressed air. If a brush does not resolve it, that is a technician job.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

I cannot hear anything at all. What does that mean?

Blockage produces quiet, never total silence. If there is no sound whatsoever, check that media volume is up, that no Bluetooth device is connected, and that Do Not Disturb is off. If all three are clear, the fault is hardware.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
