The science behind the sound

Water trapped in a speaker grille muffles the sound and can cause distortion. A strong, low‑frequency tone makes the speaker's diaphragm move a large distance back and forth — that mechanical vibration flicks droplets out of the mesh.

How to clear your speaker

Turn your volume up

Set your device to around 70–80% volume. The tool works by vibration, so it needs some power behind it.

Hold your phone with the speaker facing the floor or a soft cloth so water drains out instead of pooling deeper.

A speaker that has been wet and is also dusty is the most common real-world case, and it is worth handling deliberately because the two problems interact. Wet lint behaves very differently from dry lint.

Order matters: water first, always

Damp dust compacts. Once moisture has soaked into lint packed in the mesh, that lint forms a dense mat that no amount of vibration will shift while it is still wet — it has effectively become a solid. Clearing the liquid first, then letting the remaining debris dry, then working on the debris, is significantly more effective than attacking both at once. Attempting dust removal on a wet grille tends to push the mat deeper.

The sequence

  1. Blot the exterior dry with a lint-free cloth.
  2. Run two water-ejection cycles, grille facing down, wiping between them.
  3. Leave the device speaker-down in moving air for a few hours. Not rice — open air dries faster and rice adds starch dust to a grille you are trying to clear.
  4. Once dry, brush the grille gently with a soft dry brush.
  5. Run three or four sweeping deep-clean cycles.
  6. Test with speech rather than music.

Why speech is the better test

Music is a poor diagnostic. A bass-heavy track masks the mid and high frequency dullness that indicates remaining blockage, and a track you know well biases what you think you hear. Consonants are the giveaway — if s and t sounds are soft or smeared, something is still in the mesh.

If the residue is sticky

Sugary liquids — soda, juice, coffee with sugar — leave a tacky film that binds dust into a solid crust and physically restricts the diaphragm. Sound will not clear that, and neither will brushing. Sticky residue is one of the clear cases for professional cleaning, because it needs solvent and disassembly rather than vibration.

Why the order is the whole point

Damp fibre compacts into a dense mat that vibration cannot move, and as it dries it bonds to the mesh. Clearing liquid first, then allowing the remainder to dry, then working the debris is substantially more effective than attacking both at once — and attacking dust while the grille is wet actively presses the mat deeper.

The unavoidable element is the drying gap of two to four hours. Compressing it is the commonest reason this case gets a partial result.

Will this really get water out of my phone?

Yes — for water trapped in the external speaker grille, the low‑frequency vibration is very effective. It cannot remove water from deep inside the device; if your phone was fully submerged, also power it off and let it air‑dry in a bag of rice or silica gel.

Is it safe for my speaker?

Completely. It plays standard audio frequencies at normal volume. It does not overdrive or damage the speaker. Just avoid setting the volume to 100% for long periods on cheap speakers, as with any loud audio.
