Sweeping across a range denies it that resting point, because the motion keeps changing. This is why dust typically needs four or five passes where water often clears in one or two.
A soft dry brush — a clean toothbrush, or a camera lens brush — worked gently across the grille surface lifts loose lint before you start, and measurably improves what the sound can then reach. Adhesive putty pressed lightly onto the grille and lifted straight off will pull compacted debris out of the openings.

The grille you can see is not the speaker. Behind it sits a small acoustic chamber, then a fine dust mesh, and only then the diaphragm. Debris usually sits in the chamber and on the outer face of the mesh — which is good news, because it means it can be pushed back out the way it came. It also explains why poking at the opening is counterproductive: you are moving the problem somewhere you cannot reach.
Pockets shed lint continuously, and a bottom-firing speaker faces upward in most pockets. Cases that partially cover the grille trap it against the openings. A monthly clearing cycle prevents the slow accumulation that people usually only notice once the sound has already degraded noticeably.
