Water in a grille is not a loose droplet. It is a continuous film held together by surface tension and clinging to the mesh and diaphragm. Surface tension is a cohesive force with a breaking point — apply enough displacement and the film does not gradually loosen, it fragments all at once into separate droplets.
That threshold behaviour is why water often clears in a single cycle while dust takes five. Dust releases particle by particle, with no single moment of success. Water has one.
Most people notice the tone change character partway through the first cycle — becoming cleaner and slightly louder without touching the volume. That is the film breaking and the diaphragm regaining travel it had lost to damping. It is a genuinely useful signal that the mechanism is working.
The diaphragm's airflow alternates — outward, then inward — and over a full cycle those roughly cancel. What biases net movement outward is gravity. Grille facing down means the outward stroke is assisted and the inward stroke opposed. Held flat, the two nearly balance and freed droplets settle back. This single detail changes results more than any setting.
