People generally judge recovery by whether the speaker sounds normal. That is the wrong signal, and relying on it is how a recoverable phone becomes a damaged one.

The speaker recovers first

The speaker cavity is close to the surface and vents to open air, so it clears faster than anywhere else in the chassis. Audio often returns to normal within minutes of ejection while moisture remains around the charging port, the SIM tray and inside the case seams. Clear audio means the cavity is clear. It tells you nothing about the rest of the device.

A realistic timeline

The charging rule, and why it is absolute

Do not charge until you are past the 24–48 hour mark, even if everything seems fine. Voltage across damp connector pins corrodes them fast, and it is the single most common way a splash becomes permanent damage. Wireless charging is safe in the meantime on models that support it, because it does not use the port. If your phone shows a moisture-detected warning, let it clear on its own rather than overriding it.

Signs damage has already occurred

Audio that recovered and then degraded again over following days points to corrosion rather than blockage. Green or white powdery residue near any port is active corrosion. A device that runs warm, will not hold charge, or keeps showing liquid warnings needs inspection regardless of speaker quality.

Check the indicator

Eject the SIM tray and look inside the slot for a small white strip. Pink or red means liquid reached the internals. It takes ten seconds and it converts guesswork into a fact.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I run it immediately or wait for the phone to dry?

Immediately, for the speaker itself — liquid that leaves early cannot sit and corrode. Dry the exterior first so you are not pulling surface water inward. The waiting rule applies to charging, not to ejection: never plug in a wet device.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.
