Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency range where diaphragm travel is greatest.

Several methods circulate for this and they are not equivalent. Two work, two do nothing, and two cause damage.

Works: acoustic ejection

A low-frequency tone drives the diaphragm through its full travel, breaking the surface tension holding water as a film and pumping the resulting droplets out through the grille. It is free, takes about a minute, carries no risk at moderate volume, and it is the only method that reaches inside the cavity without opening anything. This is the primary method.

Works: gravity and moving air

Unglamorous and genuinely effective as a complement. Grille facing down, in a room with air movement, for several hours. A fan on low does more than any gadget. Gravity is doing roughly half the work in acoustic ejection too, which is why orientation matters so much during cycles.

Does nothing: rice

Rice is a weak desiccant — open moving air removes moisture faster. It also sheds starch dust into charging ports, microphone holes and the speaker grille you are trying to clear. It persists as advice because phones often recover anyway, and the rice gets the credit for time passing.

Does nothing useful: silica gel

Better than rice as a desiccant, but it only affects air immediately around the device. It does not draw water out of a sealed cavity. Harmless, marginal.

Causes damage: heat

Hairdryers, radiators, ovens. Heat warps thin diaphragms and adhesives, and it converts liquid water into vapour that penetrates further into the chassis before condensing somewhere new. It reliably makes things worse.

Causes damage: compressed air into the grille

Drives water and any debris past the dust mesh into the cavity, and can push the diaphragm beyond its normal travel. If you use compressed air at all, direct it across the grille surface at a shallow angle, never into the opening.

The thing that matters more than any method

Not charging the device. Voltage across damp connector pins is the most common cause of permanent damage after water exposure, and it is entirely avoidable. Wait 24 to 48 hours, or use wireless charging if your model supports it.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Should I run it immediately or wait for the phone to dry?

Immediately, for the speaker itself — liquid that leaves early cannot sit and corrode. Dry the exterior first so you are not pulling surface water inward. The waiting rule applies to charging, not to ejection: never plug in a wet device.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

What this cannot fix
