A speaker grille has to let air move, so it is among the least sealed openings on any device. Water enters through capillary action — the narrow slot draws liquid in rather than repelling it. This is why a splash that leaves no visible trace elsewhere can still leave a speaker fully blocked, and why IP ratings offer less protection here than people expect.
Two effects at once. Liquid adds mass to the diaphragm, reducing how efficiently it moves. And it physically obstructs the openings, so less air escapes the cavity. Together they produce the characteristic quiet, dull, underwater quality — volume down, treble gone, but nothing rattling and nothing missing.
Blot the exterior dry. Turn Bluetooth off entirely. Case off. Volume to 70–80 percent. Grille facing down, device angled about 45 degrees. Run 30–60 second cycles, wiping the grille between each. Two or three cycles handles most exposure. You will often hear the tone become cleaner partway through the first cycle — that is the surface tension film breaking.
