Remove the device from the liquid and turn it off. A powered board with moisture bridging contacts is where short circuits happen. If it is already off, leave it off — do not press the power button to check whether it still works.
Take off the case, eject the SIM tray, and remove any attached accessory. The case traps water against the chassis, and an open SIM slot gives moisture an exit route. While the tray is out, look at the liquid contact indicator inside it — white means liquid has not reached that point, pink or red means it has.
Blot with a lint-free cloth. Blot rather than rub: rubbing pushes water into seams and openings. Pay attention to the charging port, the speaker grille and the SIM slot. Hold the device with ports facing down and let gravity assist.
Now run ejection cycles, grille facing down, at 70–80 percent volume, wiping between each. Doing this early matters because liquid that leaves the cavity in the first ten minutes never gets the chance to sit and corrode.
Clean fresh water is recoverable. Salt water, pool water, soap, and anything sugary leave residue that keeps working on the internals long after the device seems fine. If it was not plain water, have it inspected regardless of how it sounds afterwards.
