How to clear your speaker

Turn your volume up

Set your device to around 70–80% volume. The tool works by vibration, so it needs some power behind it.

Hold your phone with the speaker facing the floor or a soft cloth so water drains out instead of pooling deeper.

Water in a speaker cavity is held in place by surface tension, forming a film across the mesh and the diaphragm. That film adds mass and damps the driver's movement, which is exactly why the sound goes muffled. Breaking the film into separate droplets is the entire job — once it is no longer continuous, air pressure and gravity carry the pieces out.

Do these four things before you start

  1. Blot the outside dry. Surface water gets drawn toward the grille by the pressure changes a cycle creates. Blot, do not rub — rubbing pushes liquid into openings.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off completely. Not just disconnect. If a paired device is in range the phone may route audio there silently, and you will conclude the tool does not work when it never played through the blocked speaker.
  3. Set volume to roughly 70–80 percent. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more travel.
  4. Point the grille straight down. Gravity does roughly half the work. Angling the device about 45 degrees so liquid runs off the casing rather than pooling on it works better than holding it flat.

Run it in cycles, and wipe in between

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle. Stop, blot the grille area, then run the next one. This matters more than people expect: expelled water sitting on the outside of the grille gets pulled back in on the following cycle's intake stroke, so three cycles run back to back can recycle the same liquid instead of removing it.

Not all liquid is equally urgent

Fresh water is the best case — it evaporates and leaves little behind. Everything else is worse. Salt water leaves chloride deposits that keep corroding metal long after the speaker sounds normal. Sugary drinks leave residue that traps dust and jams the diaphragm mechanically. Soapy and chlorinated water both have reduced surface tension, which lets them penetrate further into the chassis than plain water would. If it was anything other than clean fresh water, eject it the same way but plan on having the device inspected regardless of how it sounds afterwards.

The one rule that matters most

Do not charge a device that has been wet. This is the most common way a recoverable situation becomes an unrecoverable one — voltage across a damp connector corrodes the pins rapidly and can short the charging circuit. If your phone shows a moisture-detected warning, that warning is doing its job. Do not override it.

When to stop

Two or three cycles is the honest limit. The mechanism either engages in the first minute or it does not engage at all, and continuing past that point is not neutral — sustained low-frequency output at volume heats the voice coil, and on an already-damaged driver it can enlarge a tear. If there has been no audible change, check the symptoms of genuine hardware damage.

Will this really get water out of my phone?

Yes — for water trapped in the external speaker grille, the low‑frequency vibration is very effective. It cannot remove water from deep inside the device; if your phone was fully submerged, also power it off and let it air‑dry in a bag of rice or silica gel.
