Why an IP68 phone can still suffer water damage
An IP rating is a laboratory measurement taken under specified conditions on a new device. It is a genuine engineering standard, not marketing — but it describes a starting condition rather than a permanent property, and it excludes more than most people realise.
What the numbers actually mean
In IP67 and IP68, the first digit covers solid particle protection and the second covers liquid. A 7 means immersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes. An 8 means immersion deeper than 1 metre, with the manufacturer specifying the actual depth and duration — which is why IP68 devices differ from each other. The iPhone 11 was rated to 2 metres for 30 minutes; later generations went further.
Read the manufacturer's stated depth rather than assuming all IP68 devices are equivalent. They are not.

Why seals degrade without anything visibly happening
The adhesive gaskets sealing a phone expand and contract with every heat cycle — charging, gaming, sunlight, cold weather. Over a couple of years that repeated cycling gradually reduces the seal's integrity. No single event causes it and nothing looks wrong. Apple states directly that water resistance is not permanent and diminishes with normal wear, and other manufacturers say the same.
Repairs end the rating in practice
If the screen or battery has ever been replaced, the factory seal was broken and re-made with replacement adhesive. Even manufacturer service does not generally guarantee original-spec resistance afterwards, and independent repairs rarely restore it at all. A repaired IP68 phone should be treated as substantially less protected than its rating implies.
Why the speaker grille is the weak point
A speaker has to move air, so its opening cannot be sealed the way a button or a port can. Manufacturers use fine hydrophobic mesh to resist ingress while permitting airflow, but that mesh degrades with contamination and is the least sealed opening on most devices. This is why a phone can pass an immersion test and still end up with a muffled speaker after a splash.
What to do anyway
Treat a rated device like an unrated one after liquid contact. Power it off, dry the exterior, clear the speaker with low-frequency ejection cycles, check the liquid contact indicator, and do not charge for 24 to 48 hours.
