Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency range where diaphragm travel is greatest.

Clearing the speaker is the most audible fix, but water rarely limits itself to one opening. These are the other places it collects and what each one needs.

The charging port

The most consequential and the one people most often get wrong. Never charge a wet port — voltage across damp pins corrodes them within minutes. Hold the device port-down and let it drain, then leave it in moving air for 24 to 48 hours. Do not insert anything absorbent into the port; paper and cotton shed fibres that stay behind. If your phone shows a moisture-detected warning, let it clear on its own.

The SIM tray

Eject it early. It gives trapped moisture an escape route, and the slot houses the liquid contact indicator — a small white strip that turns pink or red once liquid has reached the internals. Leave the tray out while drying.

Buttons

Power and volume buttons sit in wells that trap water and route it inward. Do not press them repeatedly to "work it out" — that pumps liquid further in. Hold the device with buttons facing down and let gravity do it.

The camera housing

Water behind a lens shows as haze or spots in photos. It usually clears on its own as the device dries, over a day or two. Do not attempt to open it, and do not apply heat, which frequently causes permanent internal fogging.

The microphones

Phones have two or three, in different locations. Symptoms are confusing: callers cannot hear you but voice memos are fine, or the reverse, depending on which mic each app uses. Test by recording a voice memo, then a video, then making a call. Mic openings are pinholes behind extremely fine mesh — far more fragile than a speaker grille, with no acoustic method available. Dry air and time only.

Under the screen

Discolouration, dead touch zones or lines usually mean water has reached beneath the display. That is not a home fix and it does not improve with drying. Back up your data immediately and have it inspected.

The overall priority

Power off, dry the exterior, clear the speaker, then wait. The waiting is the part that does most of the work, and charging too early is what undoes it.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I run it immediately or wait for the phone to dry?

Immediately, for the speaker itself — liquid that leaves early cannot sit and corrode. Dry the exterior first so you are not pulling surface water inward. The waiting rule applies to charging, not to ejection: never plug in a wet device.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
