A soft dry brush. A clean toothbrush works; a camera lens brush is better because the bristles are softer and it has a handle designed for control. Used across the grille rather than into it, this is the single most useful physical tool.
Cleaning putty. The best home tool for compacted or oily debris. It grips material and lifts it straight out rather than dragging it sideways. Choose a soft cleaning putty rather than a stiff adhesive — if it leaves residue on your fingers it is too soft.
A lint-free cloth. For blotting between cycles, which matters more than people expect — expelled water left on the grille gets drawn back in.
A wooden or plastic toothpick. For charging ports and headphone sockets only, never speaker grilles. Never metal.
A small torch. Held nearly parallel to the grille, raking light reveals texture that direct light washes out, and tells you whether the debris is loose fibre, compacted mat or oily film.
Compressed air. Fired into a grille it drives debris past the dust mesh permanently and can push the diaphragm beyond its travel. If you already own it, use it only across a surface at a shallow angle.
Metal picks and SIM tools. They tear the mesh protecting the driver. Once punctured, every future bit of pocket lint goes straight through.
Alcohol and cleaning fluids. They carry debris inward and attack the adhesive holding the mesh in place.
Ultrasonic jewellery cleaners. Genuinely effective on a removed speaker assembly, useless and dangerous on an assembled phone.
Gravity — grille facing down at about 45 degrees. Moving air. A recorded voice memo as a fixed reference for before-and-after comparison. Patience across 24 to 48 hours before charging a wet device. These account for most of a successful recovery and cost nothing.

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.
