Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency range where diaphragm travel is greatest.

A speaker box that has developed a rattle sounds convincingly like a failing driver. Distinguishing them takes a couple of minutes and can save an unnecessary repair.

The distinguishing test

Enclosure rattles are frequency-specific. They appear at certain notes and vanish at others, because a loose panel resonates at its own natural frequency rather than across the range. Driver damage is broadly present — it affects everything, getting worse as volume rises.

Play a slow frequency sweep. A buzz that appears in a narrow band and then disappears is the enclosure. A buzz that grows steadily with volume across all frequencies is the driver.

Common enclosure causes

The surface it sits on

Before opening anything, pick the speaker up and hold it in the air while it plays. A resonance that disappears was the table, shelf or whatever was in sympathetic contact — not the speaker at all. This is worth doing first because it costs nothing.

Port noise versus rattle

Ported enclosures produce airflow noise at high volume with bass-heavy content — a chuffing rather than a buzz. That is normal behaviour at the design limit, not a fault. Reducing volume or moving the speaker away from a wall usually resolves it.

Why cleaning tones do not apply

Acoustic cleaning addresses obstruction in a speaker cavity. An enclosure fault is a mechanical looseness in the box, and running tones through it will make the rattle audible but will not fix it. This is a case for a screwdriver, not a tone.

FAQ

Common questions

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
