Never run ejection tones into AirPods while wearing them. The driver is a fraction of the size of a phone speaker and sits millimetres from your eardrum. Remove them, place them mesh-down on a cloth, and use roughly half the volume you would use on a handset — if you use tones at all.
Water gets the blame; cerumen is the actual cause in most cases. It packs into the speaker mesh and it is adhesive rather than loose, which means acoustic cycles do essentially nothing to it. Vibration moves loose material; it does not break adhesive bonds.
Nothing sharp — the mesh is very thin and once punctured the driver is unprotected. Nothing wet — Apple specifically warns against getting moisture into the openings.
Each AirPod has a speaker mesh that fires into your ear canal and a separate vent that equalises pressure. A blocked vent causes a plugged, pressurised sensation rather than muffled audio, and it is easy to mistake for a speaker problem.
AirPods Pro and AirPods 3 onward are rated IPX4 — splash and sweat resistant, not waterproof, and not rated for submersion. Critically, the rating covers the buds and not the charging case. A soaked case is the more common failure, and charging a damp case is how the contacts corrode. Leave it open, lid up, in moving air, and do not connect power until dry.

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.
No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.
No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.
For maintenance, roughly once a month is plenty. More often if you exercise heavily, work outdoors, or live somewhere humid or dusty. There is no benefit to daily use on a speaker that sounds fine.
