Lint compacts in the bottom of the socket exactly as it does in a charging port, preventing the plug from seating fully. Because a 3.5 mm plug carries left, right, ground and microphone on separate rings, a plug that stops short makes contact on the wrong rings — producing audio in one ear only, or thin hollow sound, or audio that cuts when the cable moves.
The tell is that the plug does not click home, or sits proud of the socket compared with how it used to.
The socket contains a switch that tells the phone headphones are connected. Debris or moisture can hold that switch closed after the plug is removed, so the device keeps routing audio to headphones that are not there — and the loudspeaker stays silent. If your speaker suddenly produces nothing at all, this is worth checking before assuming a hardware failure.
Insert and remove a plug slowly several times to work the switch. If moisture is suspected, leave the device socket-down in moving air. A restart clears the routing flag once the switch releases.
Try different headphones before working on the socket. A partly broken conductor near the plug produces identical symptoms — one channel, intermittent, changes with movement — and it is far more common than a faulty socket.
