An earpiece doing double duty. The most common modern arrangement. The same driver handles calls and acts as the second stereo channel for media. Quieter than the bottom speaker by design, because it was engineered for close-range voice.
A genuine dedicated front-firing speaker. Found on some gaming phones and older devices with large bezels. A real second driver matched more closely to the bottom one.
Play music through the phone speaker and cover the top slot with a fingertip. If the sound changes noticeably, it is contributing to media — so it is either arrangement two or three. If nothing changes, it is an earpiece only, and it will still matter for calls even though it plays no part in music.
An earpiece — whether or not it doubles as a stereo channel — sits against your face and clogs with facial oil, sweat and makeup. That residue is sticky and adhesive, and acoustic cycles do very little to it. Adhesive putty and a soft dry brush do most of the work.
A genuine dedicated front speaker collects more ordinary airborne dust and responds better to cycles, though still at lower volume than the bottom driver.
A protector cut slightly wrong or applied off-centre will partially cover the top slot and muffle it exactly as a blockage would. This is one of the most frequent causes of a "suddenly quiet top speaker" on an otherwise healthy phone, and it takes five seconds to check.
The proximity sensor, front camera and display are all close by. Nothing wet, nothing sharp, no compressed air. Putty pressed lightly and lifted straight off, plus brushing along the slot rather than into it.

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.
Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.
Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.
Blockage produces quiet, never total silence. If there is no sound whatsoever, check that media volume is up, that no Bluetooth device is connected, and that Do Not Disturb is off. If all three are clear, the fault is hardware.
