Before you start — the three that matter

  1. Turn Bluetooth off in Settings, not Control Centre. The Control Centre toggle disconnects current devices but leaves the radio active, and iOS will happily reconnect mid-cycle. Settings → Bluetooth → off is the one that counts.
  2. Remove the case. Cases very commonly overlap the bottom grille, and any MagSafe case with a raised bottom lip holds expelled water against the opening.
  3. Blot the exterior dry. Surface water gets drawn toward the grille by the pressure changes a cycle creates. Blot, do not rub.

Setting the volume correctly

Start the tone playing, then press volume up. Pressing volume buttons before audio is playing adjusts the ringer instead of media. Aim for roughly 70–80 percent — not maximum, which clips the waveform and reduces the clean diaphragm travel that does the work.

How to hold it

Bottom grille facing straight down, phone tilted about 45 degrees so liquid runs off the casing rather than pooling beside the opening. Hold it away from your body — clothing absorbs expelled water and can wick it back.

Running the cycles

Thirty to sixty seconds, then stop and blot the grille area dry before starting the next. Skipping the wipe means the next cycle's intake stroke draws the same water back in. Two or three cycles is the sensible limit for liquid.

What you should hear

If liquid is present, the tone often sounds slightly damped at first and then becomes noticeably cleaner and louder partway through, without you touching the volume. That change is the surface tension film breaking, and it is the best available confirmation that the mechanism engaged.

Verifying afterwards

Record a Voice Memo before you start and play it back after each cycle at a fixed volume. Comparing against a fixed file is far more reliable than memory. Test the earpiece separately by making a call.

FAQ

Common questions

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
