The iPhone 12 generation introduced one feature that is genuinely useful after liquid exposure, and it has nothing to do with the speaker.

MagSafe solves the charging problem

The most consequential rule after water exposure is not to charge through the port — voltage across damp Lightning pins is the commonest route from recoverable to permanent damage. The iPhone 12 introduced MagSafe, a magnetically aligned wireless charger, which sidesteps the port completely. If you have a MagSafe or any Qi charger, you can keep the phone usable through the 24–48 hour drying period without taking that risk.

IP68 to 6 metres

The iPhone 12 line was rated to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes — an increase over the iPhone 11's 2 metres. As with every IP rating, that is fresh water, laboratory conditions, new device. Seawater, chlorinated water, soap and steam all sit outside the test.

Flat edges, same grille layout

The 12 returned to flat sides, but the audio arrangement is unchanged: bottom-firing loudspeaker to the right of the Lightning port, earpiece above the display as the second stereo channel, microphone in the grille to the left of the port. Covering the left grille while audio plays confirms it is not a speaker.

Cleaning sequence

Remove the case, particularly any MagSafe case with a raised lip near the bottom edge. Blot the exterior dry. Bluetooth fully off — this catches people constantly. Volume 70–80 percent, grille facing straight down at roughly 45 degrees. Two or three cycles of 30–60 seconds, blotting between each.

Still no iOS water-eject

The feature exists on Apple Watch only. There is no iPhone equivalent on the 12 or any other model, which is exactly why a browser tone tool has a use here.

Ceramic Shield is not water resistance

The 12 introduced a tougher front cover, which improves drop resistance rather than liquid sealing. The two are unrelated, and a phone that has survived drops may still have compromised seals.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
