Run the diagnostic first

Dial *#*#6484#*#* to open the HyperOS or MIUI hardware test suite. It includes an isolated speaker test that tells you whether each driver fires correctly — more reliable than judging by ear. Some builds respond to *#*#4636#*#* instead.

Check your model's actual rating

Xiaomi flagships carry genuine IP ratings. Many Mi, Poco and Redmi models carry none, and some describe themselves as splash resistant, which reflects a coating rather than certified sealing. Look up your exact model rather than assuming the range is consistent — the difference between a sealed flagship and an unsealed mid-range model is substantial in practice.

Speaker configuration varies too

Flagships use dual symmetrical speakers. Mid-range models typically have one real bottom driver plus an earpiece that assists. Budget models often have a single driver with a decorative counterpart grille housing a microphone. Cover each opening in turn while audio plays to establish which are real.

Charging after exposure

Xiaomi's fast charging pushes high current, making a damp port a greater risk than on slower-charging devices. Do not override moisture warnings. Flagships with wireless charging can use it during the drying period; other models must simply wait 24 to 48 hours in moving air.

MIUI audio processing

Settings → Sound and vibration includes sound effects and, on some models, Dolby processing. An update resetting these changes the audio character noticeably. Safe mode will also reveal whether a third-party equaliser app is holding the route.

Cleaning sequence

Case off, brush the grille, Bluetooth fully off, volume 70–80 percent, grille facing down at about 45 degrees. Three cycles with brushing between each. Re-run *#*#6484#*#* afterwards to verify objectively rather than by ear.

FAQ

Common questions

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
