Phones maintain independent levels for media, ringer, calls, alarms and sometimes notifications and system sounds. Pressing volume up on the home screen usually adjusts the ringer, not media. This is the most common configuration cause of a quiet speaker, and the fix is to start audio playing first and adjust while it plays.
Several sources impose caps. Some regions require a media volume limit for hearing protection. Accessibility settings include volume limits. Screen-time and parental controls can impose them. Any of these produces a speaker that seems capped for no visible reason, and each is a few taps to check.
Bass boosters, virtual surround and loudness normalisation all alter output, and some reduce perceived loudness while claiming to improve it. Distortion introduced by boosting masks detail and is often heard as quieter. Setting the equaliser flat frequently sounds louder than a boosted preset on a small driver.
If the device believes headphones are connected, it sends everything there and the speaker stays silent or very quiet. Insert and remove a plug a couple of times if the model has a jack, connect and disconnect a Bluetooth device deliberately, or restart — a reboot clears a stuck route in seconds.
Some apps maintain their own internal volume independent of the system. If one app is quiet while everything else is fine, check inside that app rather than at system level.
Some devices adjust output based on ambient noise or usage patterns. In a quiet room these can reduce volume noticeably. If output varies with environment rather than staying constant, look for an adaptive sound setting.
