The diagnostic menu

Dial *#*#6484#*#* to open the HyperOS or MIUI hardware test suite, which includes an isolated speaker test. Some builds use *#*#4636#*#* instead. If neither responds, the menu is not available on that firmware.

Confirm how many speakers you have

Higher Redmi models use dual speakers; many budget models use a single bottom-firing driver with a decorative grille on the other side of the port that contains a microphone. Cover each in turn while audio plays — only a real driver changes the sound. This prevents spending effort on an opening that was never a speaker.

Sealing on budget models

Many Redmi devices carry no formal IP rating, which means no gasket sealing around the speaker cavity. Water reaches the board faster than on a sealed flagship. Even models advertising splash resistance are usually describing a coating rather than certified sealing. Act quickly after any liquid contact.

Liquid indicator

Inside the SIM tray slot on most models. White is clear; pink or red means liquid reached the internals and voids liquid-related warranty claims.

Fast charging and wet ports

Redmi's fast charging delivers significant current. Charging a damp USB-C port is a worse idea here than on a slower device. Do not override moisture warnings; wait 24 to 48 hours in moving air.

MIUI and HyperOS audio settings

Check Settings → Sound and vibration for sound effects or Dolby processing. If disabled by an update, the audio character changes noticeably — easily mistaken for a failing speaker. Also worth checking whether a third-party equaliser app is holding the audio route; safe mode will confirm.

Cleaning sequence

Case off — Redmi bundled cases frequently overlap the grille. Brush across the slot for thirty seconds. Bluetooth fully off. Volume 70–80 percent, grille facing down at about 45 degrees. Three cycles with brushing between each, then re-run the diagnostic to confirm improvement objectively.

Common questions

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
