Android gives you more diagnostic tools than iOS, and using them in order resolves most complaints before any physical intervention.
For a complete overview, see the Android troubleshooting walkthrough.
Stage 1 — Routing and volume
Turn Bluetooth off entirely in Settings, not just via the quick toggle — disconnecting leaves the radio
active and Android will reconnect. Then start audio playing and adjust volume while it plays, which
guarantees you are moving the media stream rather than the ringer.
Stage 2 — Safe mode
Hold the power button, then long-press "Power off" until safe mode is offered. This disables third-party
apps. If sound behaves normally in safe mode, an installed app is holding the audio route — commonly a music
player, a call recorder, an equaliser app or a screen recorder.
Stage 3 — Manufacturer diagnostics
Several makers expose isolated speaker tests. Samsung: *#0*# or Samsung Members. Xiaomi, Redmi
and Poco: *#*#6484#*#*. OnePlus: *#808#. Vivo: *#558#. Realme:
*#800#. Motorola: the Device Help app. These exercise each driver directly rather than leaving you
to judge by ear.
Stage 4 — Developer options
Enable by tapping Build Number seven times. Under Bluetooth settings, "Disable absolute volume" fixes a
common problem where volume behaves erratically with Bluetooth devices. Worth trying before assuming
hardware.
Stage 5 — Identify the affected driver
Play a mono voice memo and cover each grille in turn with a fingertip. Many Android phones have a decorative
grille beside the charging port that contains a microphone rather than a speaker — covering it will not change
the sound, which confirms it.
Stage 6 — Physical cleaning
Only if audio is muffled rather than silent, and only one driver is affected. Case off, brush the grille,
volume 70–80 percent, grille facing down at about 45 degrees, three cycles with brushing between each.
Water resistance caution
Many mid-range and budget Android phones carry no certified IP rating despite marketing implying resistance.
Assume the speaker cavity is unsealed and act quickly after any liquid contact.
