Manufacturer diagnostic codes

Dial these from the phone app. They open engineering menus with isolated speaker tests:

Codes vary by model and firmware; not every device responds. If nothing happens, the menu is not available on that build rather than something being wrong.

Safe mode isolates apps

Hold the power button, then long-press "Power off" until safe mode is offered. This boots with third-party apps disabled. If audio works normally in safe mode, an installed app is holding the audio route — which is a software fix, not a cleaning job.

Developer options worth knowing

Enable Developer Options (tap Build Number seven times). "Disable absolute volume" under Bluetooth settings resolves a common problem where Bluetooth volume behaves erratically. Worth trying before suspecting hardware.

Be sceptical about water resistance

Android spans a huge range. Flagship Galaxy and Pixel devices carry genuine IP68 ratings. Many mid-range and budget phones carry no certified rating at all and describe themselves as "splash resistant", which is marketing rather than a specification. Budget Redmi, Realme and Vivo Y-series devices frequently have no gasket sealing around the speaker cavity.

The decorative grille trap

Many Android phones have symmetrical grilles either side of the charging port, but only one contains a driver. Cover each in turn with a finger while audio plays — if the sound does not change, that side was never a speaker.

Almost universally inside the SIM tray slot. Eject it and look for a white strip that has turned pink or red.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
