Skin oil is the most common and mostly affects the earpiece slot, which sits against your face during every call. Cosmetics and hair products transfer the same way. Cooking oil arrives as airborne droplets — a phone on a kitchen counter near a hob accumulates a fine film over months without any single spill event.
Water in a grille is held by surface tension, a cohesive force within the liquid that has a breaking threshold. Oil is held by adhesion to the surfaces it touches, and it is far more viscous. There is no threshold to exceed — it simply wets the mesh and stays. Vibration applies mechanical force, and mechanical force does not break an adhesive bond. Running more cycles at higher volume heats the voice coil while the oil remains exactly where it was.
Oil turns a grille into flypaper. Every subsequent bit of pocket lint sticks rather than passing through or shaking out, and the combined crust restricts the diaphragm far more than either component alone. An oil-contaminated grille therefore degrades steadily rather than stabilising.
Do not apply solvent. Isopropyl alcohol and degreasers attack the adhesive holding the dust mesh in place and can damage the diaphragm's coating. Do not use soap and water — that adds a liquid problem on top of an oil problem. And do not persist with high-volume cycles hoping it eventually shifts.
