Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency that moves water best.

Oil requires a completely different approach from dust or water, and several of the standard recommendations actively make it worse. Here is what each method does.

Adhesive putty — the one that works

Cleaning putty grips oily residue and lifts it away mechanically, which is the only home technique that removes rather than redistributes it. Technique matters:

Use a soft cleaning putty rather than a stiff adhesive. If it leaves residue on your fingers, it is too soft for a grille.

Dry microfibre — useful, limited

Removes surface film from the grille face. Will not lift anything sitting in an opening. Worth doing first so the putty engages with residue rather than with loose surface oil.

Acoustic cycles — no effect

Worth stating plainly. Vibration cannot break adhesive bonds. Cycles do nothing to oil at any volume, and sustained high-volume output heats the voice coil for no benefit.

Isopropyl alcohol — risky

It does dissolve oil, which is why it gets recommended. The problem is what else it dissolves: the adhesive securing the dust mesh, and the coating on some diaphragms. Applied to a grille it also carries dissolved oil inward as it wicks. If a technician uses it, it is with the speaker assembly removed and controlled quantities. On an assembled phone it is a poor trade.

Soap and water — makes it worse

You would be adding a liquid ingress problem to an oil problem, and surfactants penetrate further than plain water because they reduce surface tension.

Compressed air — makes it permanent

Drives the oily residue and everything stuck to it past the mesh into the cavity, where no home method reaches.

Professional ultrasonic — the real answer for penetrated oil

With the assembly removed, an ultrasonic bath with appropriate solution removes oil thoroughly. This is a routine repair-shop procedure and is usually inexpensive relative to replacing the module.

FAQ

Common questions

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Is removing dust different from removing water?

Yes. Water is held by surface tension and usually clears in one or two cycles. Dust is wedged mechanically and held by static, so it needs a sweeping range of frequencies and several more passes.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

How often should I use it?

For maintenance, roughly once a month is plenty. More often if you exercise heavily, work outdoors, or live somewhere humid or dusty. There is no benefit to daily use on a speaker that sounds fine.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
