There is nothing an installed app can do to a speaker that a web page cannot, because the limiting factor is the physical driver rather than the software driving it. That makes the permission list the most informative thing about any cleaner app.

Permissions a tone generator genuinely needs

None. Playing audio is not a protected permission on Android or iOS — any app or web page can output sound without asking. So every permission a cleaner app requests is for something other than cleaning your speaker.

Red flags on the install screen

The APK problem specifically

Speaker-cleaning APKs distributed outside official stores are a recurring vector for adware and worse, precisely because the category sounds harmless and the function is trivial to fake. An installer that asks you to enable “install from unknown sources” for a tool that plays a 165 Hz tone is not a reasonable trade.

What to look for instead

If you do want an installed app, prefer one that states its frequency range, offers a sweep rather than a single fixed tone, includes a volume control rather than defaulting to maximum, and is honest that it cannot repair hardware damage. Those four things correlate strongly with whether the developer understands the mechanism.

Common questions

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Is removing dust different from removing water?

Yes. Water is held by surface tension and usually clears in one or two cycles. Dust is wedged mechanically and held by static, so it needs a sweeping range of frequencies and several more passes.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

How often should I use it?

For maintenance, roughly once a month is plenty. More often if you exercise heavily, work outdoors, or live somewhere humid or dusty. There is no benefit to daily use on a speaker that sounds fine.
