Water is held in a grille by surface tension — a cohesive force within the liquid itself. Break the film and it releases. Oil is held by adhesion to the surfaces it touches, and it is far more viscous. It does not form a film with a breaking threshold; it wets the mesh and the diaphragm and stays there. Mechanical vibration cannot overcome an adhesive bond, which is why cycles that clear water in seconds do nothing at all to oil.
Even setting adhesion aside, oil resists flow far more than water does. The airflow a small speaker generates is nowhere near sufficient to move a viscous fluid through fine mesh openings. Increasing volume does not change this meaningfully — it heats the coil while the oil stays put.
Oil traps dust. Once present, every subsequent bit of pocket lint that reaches the grille sticks to it rather than passing through or shaking loose. An oil-contaminated grille therefore gets worse steadily, and the combined crust is more restrictive than either component alone.
Do not apply solvent yourself. Alcohol and degreasers attack the adhesive holding the dust mesh and can damage the diaphragm coating. Do not use soap and water — you would be adding a liquid problem to an oil problem. And do not run repeated high-volume cycles hoping it eventually shifts; it will not, and sustained output stresses the coil.
