Several products and techniques are marketed for this. Judged by whether they physically move liquid out of a speaker cavity, most do not.

Acoustic tone generators — effective

The only method that reaches inside the cavity without disassembly. Low-frequency displacement breaks the surface tension film and pumps droplets out. Free, fast, no risk at moderate volume. Whether it comes as a web page, an app or a built-in feature makes no difference to the result — the same waveform reaches the same driver.

Gravity and airflow — effective

Genuinely the second most useful method and the least marketed, because nobody can sell it. Grille down, in moving air, for several hours. A desk fan on low outperforms every commercial drying product in this list.

Desiccant sachets — marginal

Silica gel is a real desiccant and better than rice, but it acts on the air immediately surrounding the device rather than drawing liquid from a cavity. Harmless, mildly useful for the enclosed-container stage of drying, not a speaker solution.

Rice — ineffective and slightly harmful

A weak desiccant that open air outperforms, plus it sheds starch dust into ports and grilles. It persists as advice because phones often recover on their own and the rice receives credit for elapsed time.

Vacuum — ineffective

Household vacuums cannot generate meaningful suction across an aperture that small. Not harmful, not useful.

Hairdryers and heat — harmful

Heat warps thin diaphragms and adhesives and converts liquid into vapour that penetrates further before condensing somewhere new. Reliably makes things worse.

Compressed air into the grille — harmful

Drives liquid and debris past the dust mesh into the cavity and can push the diaphragm past its normal travel. Across the grille at a shallow angle is acceptable; into it is not.

The genuinely useful purchase

Cleaning putty, for the debris component that often accompanies water. Beyond that, the effective tools here cost nothing.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I run it immediately or wait for the phone to dry?

Immediately, for the speaker itself — liquid that leaves early cannot sit and corrode. Dry the exterior first so you are not pulling surface water inward. The waiting rule applies to charging, not to ejection: never plug in a wet device.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

What this cannot fix
