Why both being equally affected is informative

The loudspeaker and earpiece are physically separate, in different parts of the chassis, with different grille designs. Liquid or debris rarely reaches both in equal measure. So when both sound identically wrong, the cause is usually upstream of the drivers — in software or the audio chip.

Check these first

  1. Equaliser or audio enhancement. Applies to all output paths at once. A setting changed by an update produces exactly this symptom.
  2. Volume limiter. Regional caps, accessibility limits, parental controls.
  3. Bluetooth partially routing. Turn the radio off entirely in settings.
  4. Restart. Clears a stuck audio route in seconds.
  5. Safe mode on Android. Isolates a third-party app holding the audio route — commonly an equaliser, call recorder or screen recorder.

Test them separately anyway

Play a mono voice memo and cover each grille in turn with a fingertip. Judging them in isolation is far more reliable than comparing while both play. If one is actually worse than the other, you have a physical problem in that one after all.

When both really are blocked

It happens after full submersion, where liquid reaches every opening. In that case both need clearing — but note they respond differently. The bottom speaker takes dry lint and responds well to cycles; the earpiece collects oily residue and responds better to putty and brushing.

If both are silent rather than quiet

Not blockage at all. Obstruction reduces output but never eliminates it. Two silent drivers points at the audio chip, a software fault, or a routing problem.

FAQ

Common questions

How often should I use it?

For maintenance, roughly once a month is plenty. More often if you exercise heavily, work outdoors, or live somewhere humid or dusty. There is no benefit to daily use on a speaker that sounds fine.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Will this void my warranty?

Playing an audio file does not modify your device or open it, so the tool itself has no warranty implication. Note separately that liquid damage is usually excluded from standard warranty cover regardless.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
