First: define "not working"

The distinction matters enormously. Quiet or muffled means the speaker is producing sound but something is restricting it — blockage is plausible. Completely silent means something else entirely, because obstruction reduces output but never eliminates it. Which one you have determines everything that follows.

Stage 1 — Free checks, two minutes

  1. Bluetooth fully off, not disconnected.
  2. Media volume adjusted while audio is actually playing.
  3. Do Not Disturb and any focus mode off.
  4. Restart the device.
  5. Equaliser and audio enhancements set flat.
  6. Case removed.

Stage 2 — Isolate

Play a mono voice memo and cover each grille in turn with a fingertip. This tells you whether one driver or both is affected. One affected driver points strongly at a physical cause; both affected equally points at software or the audio chip.

Stage 3 — Test the route, not just the speaker

Try a different app, a local file rather than a stream, and a call versus media. If one path works and another does not, the fault is in software rather than hardware. On Android, safe mode isolates third-party apps holding the audio route.

Stage 4 — Physical, if indicated

Only if the sound is muffled rather than silent, and only one driver is affected. Brush the grille, use adhesive putty if available, then three or four acoustic cycles at 70–80 percent with the grille facing down, brushing between each.

Stage 5 — Stop criteria

What to tell a technician

Which driver is affected, whether it is quiet or silent, how it behaves at low versus high volume, whether there was liquid or a drop, and what you have already ruled out. That turns a vague complaint into a diagnosis they can act on, and often reduces the diagnostic charge.

FAQ

Common questions

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

I cannot hear anything at all. What does that mean?

Blockage produces quiet, never total silence. If there is no sound whatsoever, check that media volume is up, that no Bluetooth device is connected, and that Do Not Disturb is off. If all three are clear, the fault is hardware.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

Will this void my warranty?

Playing an audio file does not modify your device or open it, so the tool itself has no warranty implication. Note separately that liquid damage is usually excluded from standard warranty cover regardless.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
