Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency range where diaphragm travel is greatest.
Before fixing anything, it is worth establishing which component is affected. Most phones have two audio outputs that fail independently.
The loudspeaker sits at the bottom edge and handles music, video, ringtones and
speakerphone. The earpiece is the narrow slot above the screen, used for calls held to your
ear — and on most modern phones it also serves as the second stereo channel.
The thirty-second test
Make a call held to your ear, then play a music file on speaker. If calls are clear but media is muffled, the
bottom grille is blocked. If the reverse, the earpiece is. If both are equally dull, suspect a setting rather
than debris — a physical obstruction cannot affect a driver it is not touching.
Watch for the decorative grille
Many phones have symmetrical openings either side of the charging port, but only one contains a driver — the
other houses a microphone. Cover each with a fingertip while audio plays; if the sound does not change, that side
was never a speaker.
They clog differently
The bottom speaker collects dry pocket lint, which is loose and responds well to acoustic cycles. The earpiece
collects facial oil, sweat and cosmetics — sticky, adhesive residue that vibration cannot shift. That one needs
adhesive putty and a soft brush instead.
What your symptom points to
Muffled but complete — blockage. Sudden onset means liquid; gradual means dust.
Buzzing worse at high volume — torn diaphragm. Stop.
Total silence — broken connection, not debris.
Crackling that changes when you flex the phone — loose connector.

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.
How long should I run it?
Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.
Should I set volume to maximum?
No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.
Does the rice trick work?
No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.
It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?
Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.
