Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency range where diaphragm travel is greatest.

Real-world blockages are usually mixed — some liquid, some debris. Each responds to a different waveform, so a single setting only ever solves half the problem.

Stage one: a fixed low tone for liquid

Water is held by surface tension, a cohesive force with a breaking threshold. The best attack is maximum displacement concentrated at one frequency near the driver's resonance. When that threshold is exceeded the film fragments all at once — which is why water often clears in a single cycle.

Stage two: a sweep for debris

Dust is held by static charge and mechanical wedging, which has no threshold. Worse, a steady oscillation lets particles settle into a position where they stop being disturbed. A sweep across 120–400 Hz keeps the motion changing so no stable position exists. Dust needs four or five passes where water needed one.

The gap between the stages is not optional

Damp fibre compacts into a dense mat that vibration cannot move. Running the dust stage while the grille is still wet presses that mat further in rather than pulling it out — you can actively make the debris component harder to fix by attacking it too early. Two to four hours of drying in moving air converts an intractable problem into an ordinary one.

The full sequence

  1. Blot the exterior dry.
  2. Two fixed-tone cycles, grille down, wiping between them.
  3. Wait two to four hours, speaker-down, in moving air.
  4. Brush the dry grille for thirty seconds.
  5. Three or four sweep cycles.
  6. Brush again, then test with speech.

When one stage is enough

If the muffling appeared suddenly after a splash, it is liquid — stage one alone usually resolves it. If it developed gradually over months with no water involved, it is debris — skip straight to the sweep. The two-stage approach is for the mixed case, which is the most common but not the only one.

Reading which stage worked

A sudden step change in clarity means liquid released. A gradual improvement across several passes means debris shifting. Noticing which one you got tells you what was actually in there.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

What this cannot fix
