Playing a cleaning sound from a video platform can work, but there are specific technical reasons it often works less well than a generated tone, and they are easy to check.

Compression rounds off the waveform

Video platforms re-encode uploaded audio using lossy compression. That process is optimised for how music and speech sound to human ears, not for preserving a mathematically clean sine wave. The result can include harmonic artefacts and slightly altered peaks — precisely the waveform precision the pumping mechanism depends on. A locally generated tone has none of this.

Loudness normalisation works against you

Most platforms normalise playback loudness across videos. A pure low-frequency tone measures differently from music, and normalisation may quietly reduce its level. You can set the device volume to 80 percent and receive considerably less than that at the driver, without any indication.

Titles are frequently wrong

Videos titled with specific frequencies often do not contain them. There is no verification, and "speaker cleaning" is a high-traffic category that attracts low-effort uploads. A video claiming 30,000 Hz cannot be delivering it — that is above human hearing and beyond what phone speakers reproduce — yet such videos exist in quantity.

How to check whether a video is actually working

Practical steps if you use one

Turn Bluetooth off entirely first — this catches more people with video than with anything else, because video apps route to paired devices readily. Set playback quality to the highest available, since lower settings compress audio harder. And check that no autoplay has moved you on to a different video mid-cycle.

The simpler alternative

A browser-generated tone avoids all of this: no compression, no normalisation, no mislabelling, no autoplay, and it works offline once loaded. Whatever source you use, the same physical rules apply — low frequency, moderate volume, grille facing down, short cycles.

Common questions

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix
