Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency that moves water best.

It is the most intuitive thing to try and the most consistently counterproductive. There are three separate reasons, and they compound.

Reason one: the waveform degrades

At maximum output the amplifier clips — the peaks of each sine wave flatten. The diaphragm then spends part of every cycle held at full extension rather than travelling through its range. Because the pumping action depends on continuous travel, this reduces the useful work each cycle does even as measured loudness increases.

Reason two: heat reduces output as you go

The voice coil is fine wire. Sustained low-frequency output at maximum heats it quickly, and heat raises resistance, which lowers output. A maximum-volume cycle is therefore progressively less effective the longer it runs — the opposite of what people expect when they run it longer to compensate.

Reason three: it can enlarge existing damage

On an intact driver, moderate volume is entirely safe. On one with a torn diaphragm or stretched suspension, high-amplitude low-frequency output drives the damaged component through large excursions repeatedly. This is the one genuine way a cleaning attempt can make a speaker worse, and it happens specifically at maximum volume on an already-faulty driver.

The earbud exception is absolute

Never run maximum-volume cycles through in-ear devices, and never while wearing them. The driver is a fraction of the size of a phone speaker and sits millimetres from your eardrum. Remove them, place them mesh-down, and use roughly half the volume you would use on a handset.

What maximum volume is briefly useful for

One thing: a short diagnostic burst. Faults that only appear at high volume — buzzing, rattling, distortion — are informative, because they distinguish mechanical damage from blockage. Five seconds is enough. That is diagnosis, not treatment.

The setting to use

70 to 80 percent on phones, 60 to 70 on larger drivers. If cycles at that level produce nothing across three attempts, the answer is not more volume — it is that the blockage is not the kind sound addresses.

FAQ

Common questions

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix
