Perfectly safe. These are ordinary frequencies your speaker already plays during music. The tool never exceeds normal listening levels — it just concentrates the energy at the frequency that moves water best.

These words get used interchangeably and they should not be. Getting the terminology right matters practically — for describing a fault to a technician and for ordering the correct part.

The receiver (earpiece)

The small driver behind the narrow slot above the screen. It is designed for close-range listening during calls, so it is quiet by design — it never needed to fill a room. On most modern phones it doubles as the second stereo channel for media, which is why it also matters for music even though it was designed for voice.

The loudspeaker

The larger driver at the bottom edge, designed for media playback, speakerphone and ringtones. It is louder, produces more bass, and is the one people usually mean by "the speaker".

Why the distinction matters

They fail independently and they fail differently. More practically: they are separate parts with separate prices, and on many phones the receiver is bonded into the display assembly — which makes replacing it a substantially bigger and more expensive job than swapping the bottom loudspeaker. Describing the wrong one to a technician can produce a wrong quote.

How each fails

Testing each in isolation

Make a call held to your ear — that is the receiver. Play a music file on speaker — that is the loudspeaker. During an active call, tapping speakerphone switches between them, which is the fastest way to confirm which is affected.

Other terms you will encounter

Ear speaker is the same thing as the receiver. Top speaker usually means the receiver but occasionally means a genuine dedicated front-firing driver on phones that have one. Bottom speaker and main speaker both mean the loudspeaker. Speakerphone is a mode, not a component — it routes call audio through the loudspeaker.

When ordering a part

Specify the exact model and whether you need the receiver or the loudspeaker assembly. On some phones the receiver ships as part of a larger flex assembly including sensors, which is worth knowing before ordering.

FAQ

Common questions

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

I cannot hear anything at all. What does that mean?

Blockage produces quiet, never total silence. If there is no sound whatsoever, check that media volume is up, that no Bluetooth device is connected, and that Do Not Disturb is off. If all three are clear, the fault is hardware.

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
