1. Charging a wet device

The most damaging thing on this list, and entirely avoidable. Voltage across damp connector pins corrodes them within minutes and can short the charging circuit. It is the most common route from a recoverable splash to permanent damage. Wait 24 to 48 hours; use wireless charging if supported.

2. Compressed air fired into a grille

Drives debris past the fine dust mesh into the acoustic cavity, where no home method reaches it. Can also push the diaphragm beyond its normal travel. Converts a cleanable problem into a permanent one in one second.

3. Pins, needles and SIM tools in the grille

The mesh behind the visible openings is extremely thin and is the only barrier protecting the diaphragm. Once punctured it does not heal, and every future bit of pocket lint passes straight through.

4. Heat

Hairdryers, radiators, ovens. Warps thin diaphragms and adhesives, and converts liquid into vapour that penetrates deeper before condensing somewhere new.

5. Sustained maximum volume

Particularly with bass-heavy content. Drives the driver past its excursion limit repeatedly, stressing the suspension and heating the voice coil. On an already-damaged diaphragm, high-volume low-frequency output enlarges tears.

6. Liquids and solvents in the grille

Alcohol attacks the adhesive holding the dust mesh in place. Soap and water carry debris inward and penetrate further than plain water because they reduce surface tension.

7. Cases that cover the grille

Slow damage rather than sudden — they trap lint and humidity against the openings, guaranteeing repeat blockages.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

What this cannot fix
