Debris and liquid restrict the diaphragm consistently across the volume range. They make everything quieter and duller in proportion. They do not produce clean sound at low volume and sudden distortion at high — that pattern indicates the driver hitting a mechanical boundary, not an obstruction.
Every speaker distorts if driven hard enough, and small phone drivers reach that point relatively early. If distortion appears only in the last ten percent of the volume range and only on bass-heavy content, that is the hardware working as designed rather than a fault. Many phones apply protective limiting to prevent exactly this.
Distortion starting at moderate volume — half or less — on ordinary content. Or buzzing that has a mechanical, rattling character rather than the compressed harshness of clipping. Or distortion confined to bass while mid-range stays clean, which points at a failed suspension with the coil bottoming out.
A poorly encoded file, a bad stream, or an aggressive equaliser setting all produce distortion at high volume that has nothing to do with the speaker. Test with a different, known-good file before concluding anything. Set any EQ flat.
