Play a music file or voice memo through the same speaker the call uses. If media sounds perfect but calls do not, the speaker is fine and the problem is somewhere in the call path. This single test eliminates the most common wrong assumption.
Poor signal produces choppy, robotic or intermittent audio — quite different from the consistent dullness of a blockage. Blockage does not come and go; network problems do. Test in a different location, or on Wi-Fi calling if available, to confirm.
Calls are heavily compressed, and how heavily depends on the network and both handsets. HD Voice (VoLTE) sounds markedly better than a legacy 2G or 3G call. If quality dropped after a network change, a SIM swap, or a roaming period, the codec is a likely explanation and nothing on the phone needs cleaning.
Easy to overlook. If one contact always sounds bad and everyone else sounds fine, the problem is at their end. Test with several people before concluding anything about your device.
WhatsApp, Messenger, Teams and similar apps use their own audio processing and their own codecs. If regular calls are fine but one app is not, that app is the cause — clear its cache, check its permissions, or reinstall it.
