No water resistance at all

JioPhone and JioPhone Next have no IP rating and no gasket sealing around openings. There is no meaningful barrier between the speaker grille and the board. This makes speed the priority after any liquid contact — power the device off immediately rather than checking whether it still works.

No liquid contact indicator

Most units have no user-visible moisture indicator, so there is no quick way to confirm whether liquid reached the internals. Judge by behaviour instead: audio that recovered and then degraded again over following days indicates corrosion rather than blockage.

No diagnostic menu

KaiOS does not expose hardware test codes. Testing means playing a known audio file at a known volume and listening — which makes recording a short reference clip beforehand more valuable here than on a phone with built-in diagnostics.

Simpler speaker layout

A single small driver, usually rear or bottom-firing, behind a simple plastic grille. There is no second stereo channel to test against, so comparison has to be against your own memory or a recorded reference.

The advantage: removable back and battery

Unlike sealed smartphones, many JioPhone units have a removable back cover and battery. After liquid exposure this is genuinely useful — remove the battery immediately, which eliminates the short-circuit risk entirely, and open the case to allow proper airflow to the interior. That is not an option on a glued smartphone.

Cleaning sequence

Back cover and battery out, blot everything dry, leave open in moving air for 24 to 48 hours. Reassemble, then run cleaning cycles at 70–80 percent volume with the grille facing down. The small driver reaches useful excursion easily; there is no benefit to maximum volume.

Repair economics

On a low-cost feature phone, a paid speaker repair frequently approaches the replacement cost of the device. Worth getting a quote before committing, and worth trying cleaning thoroughly first.

FAQ

Common questions

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Can I use headphones or earbuds while it plays?

No — and this matters. The sound has to travel through the blocked speaker to do anything, so any connected Bluetooth or wired device defeats the purpose entirely. Disconnect everything first.

What if it was salt water or a sugary drink?

Eject the liquid the same way, but treat the device as needing professional attention afterwards. Salt and sugar leave conductive, corrosive residue when they dry, and that residue keeps damaging the board long after the speaker sounds normal.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

What this cannot fix
