Cleaning a grille is treating a symptom. If debris returns within weeks, something about how the device is carried or cased is feeding it, and that is fixable.

Where the lint is coming from

Almost all of it is textile fibre shed by clothing. A pocket is a fabric-lined bag that sheds continuously, and a bottom-firing speaker faces upward inside it. Denim and fleece are the worst offenders; both shed heavily and both produce short fibres that wedge easily into mesh openings.

The case is usually the biggest factor

Many cases overlap the speaker grille slightly. That overhang creates a pocket that catches lint and holds it against the openings, so debris that would otherwise fall away accumulates instead. When choosing a case, look at whether the speaker cutout is genuinely clear of the grille or merely near it. A case with a raised lip around the bottom edge is worse than one cut flush.

Orientation in your pocket

Carrying the phone screen-inward and bottom-down keeps the main grille pointing at the pocket opening rather than into the seam where lint collects. This sounds fussy but it makes a measurable difference over months.

Sweat is underrated

A phone strapped to an arm during exercise, or carried in a gym pocket, takes on far more moisture than most people assume. Damp fibre bonds to mesh as it dries, and that bonded layer is the portion that never comes out later. If you exercise with your phone, a quick clearing cycle afterwards prevents the bonding stage.

Environments that accelerate it

A realistic maintenance interval

Monthly is plenty for ordinary use: thirty seconds with a soft dry brush and a single sweep cycle. Weekly if you exercise with the device or work in a dusty environment. There is no benefit to running cycles on a speaker that sounds fine beyond that.

FAQ

Common questions

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Is removing dust different from removing water?

Yes. Water is held by surface tension and usually clears in one or two cycles. Dust is wedged mechanically and held by static, so it needs a sweeping range of frequencies and several more passes.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

How often should I use it?

For maintenance, roughly once a month is plenty. More often if you exercise heavily, work outdoors, or live somewhere humid or dusty. There is no benefit to daily use on a speaker that sounds fine.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix
