Before you go anywhere

  1. Back up your data. A device that powers on today may not after disassembly, and liquid-damaged boards are unpredictable. This is the step people skip and regret.
  2. Sign out of accounts if you can, or at least know your passwords — some repairs require the device to be unlocked.
  3. Rule out blockage and settings first. Paying someone to discover that an equaliser was enabled is an expensive lesson.

What distinguishes a good shop for liquid damage

Speaker replacement is routine work almost anywhere. Liquid damage is not — it needs board-level inspection and ultrasonic cleaning, which many general repair shops do not do. If your device has been wet, ask specifically whether they perform ultrasonic board cleaning and corrosion inspection. A shop that only swaps modules will replace the speaker, and if the board is corroding the new speaker will fail too.

Questions worth asking before agreeing

Signs to walk away

A firm price quoted before anyone has opened the device. Reluctance to give a written estimate. No warranty on the work. Pressure to authorise immediately. And for liquid damage specifically, a shop that does not ask what kind of liquid it was — because salt water and sugary drinks change the job substantially.

Manufacturer service versus independent

Manufacturer service is more expensive and preserves warranty and water resistance more reliably. Independent shops are cheaper and often faster, but may use aftermarket parts and will usually void remaining warranty. For a device still under warranty, go to the manufacturer first — though be aware liquid damage is typically excluded from standard cover regardless.

The replacement threshold

When a quoted repair approaches half the device's current resale value, replacement usually makes more sense — particularly on an older phone that will need a battery soon anyway.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
