System Settings → Sound → Output. A MacBook routed to AirPods in another room, a Bluetooth speaker, or an external display over HDMI or USB-C is by far the commonest cause of "quiet" or "no" audio. Displays claim the audio output silently when connected.

If audio behaves oddly across all apps, the audio daemon may be stuck. In Terminal:
sudo killall coreaudiod. It restarts automatically. This resolves a range of routing and device

Some applications maintain independent volume levels. If one app is quiet while everything else is fine, check inside that app before suspecting the hardware.
MacBook Pro and Air models from 2018 onward fire through grilles either side of the keyboard, or through the keyboard well on some Air models. These collect dust and crumbs rather than water, because of how a laptop is used and carried.
Liquid on a MacBook keyboard reaches the logic board within seconds — the path is short and direct. Power down immediately, disconnect the charger, and stand the machine in a tent shape so liquid drains away from the board rather than through it.
