Many JBL portables achieve their rating with a rubber flap over the USB charging port. That flap is the seal. If it was open, or not fully pressed home, water reached the electronics bay directly regardless of what the rating says. This single check determines whether you have a driver problem or an interior problem.
JBL's models carry different ratings — some are splash resistant, some are rated for submersion, and some newer models add dust protection. Portable speakers typically include a passive radiator alongside the active driver. Water collects in that cavity readily, which produces a boomy or rattly character rather than the flat muffling you get from a blocked phone speaker.
The woven covering used across much of JBL's range holds water considerably longer than metal mesh, and it can feel dry on the surface while remaining damp underneath. Allow more drying time than seems necessary before judging whether the speaker is damaged.
Use 60–70 percent volume rather than maximum — a large driver reaches useful excursion far more easily than a phone speaker. Because the diaphragm is heavier, its resonance sits lower than a phone's, so a downward sweep works better than a fixed 165 Hz tone. Position the driver facing downward.
