What it genuinely does

It plays a low-frequency tone through your device's own speaker. That tone moves the diaphragm through its full travel, and each stroke pumps air against whatever is sitting in the speaker cavity — pushing trapped liquid and loose debris out through the grille. Gravity carries it away, which is why orientation matters.

Why "fix" is only half accurate

It removes obstructions. It repairs nothing. A speaker that is muffled because of water or lint will sound normal again once cleared — that feels like a fix and is a genuine restoration of lost performance. A speaker with a torn diaphragm, a corroded contact or a broken cable is unaffected, because there is nothing to remove.

The distinction that matters

Blockage sounds muffled but complete — quieter and duller, but nothing missing and nothing rattling. Damage sounds different: buzzing that worsens as volume rises means a torn diaphragm; total silence means a broken connection, because obstruction produces quiet and never silence.

What it costs

Nothing, and there is no reason it should. Generating a tone is a few lines of code that every browser already supports — no server work, no licensing, no processing cost.

The method in six points

Case off. Blot the exterior dry. Bluetooth off entirely. Volume 70–80 percent, not maximum. Grille facing straight down at about 45 degrees. 30–60 second cycles with a wipe between each.

The rule for afterwards

Do not charge a wet device for 24 to 48 hours, however good the speaker sounds. A clear speaker tells you the cavity is clear — not that the charging port is dry.

Common questions

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

What this cannot fix
