Hardware moves every year. The underlying method does not — but a few recent changes genuinely affect what you should do after liquid exposure.

What has not changed

The mechanism. A speaker moves a diaphragm; low frequencies move it furthest; that movement pumps water out; gravity carries it away. This has been true for as long as speakers have existed and no hardware generation alters it. Guides from several years ago are not outdated on this point.

USB-C is now near universal

The most practically relevant recent change. USB-C recesses its contacts inside the connector shell, where Lightning exposed them on the outside of the plug. That does not make a port waterproof, but the contacts are less immediately exposed to moisture sitting in the port. The rule is unchanged: do not charge a wet port.

eSIM removes a useful check

Some recent models in some regions ship without a physical SIM tray. That tray slot is where the liquid contact indicator lives on most phones — the white sticker that turns pink or red when water reaches the internals. On eSIM-only devices that quick check is no longer available, and only a technician can assess it.

IP ratings have risen, resistance has not

Depth ratings improved across recent generations. What has not changed is that those ratings are tested with fresh water, in laboratories, on new devices — and that seals degrade through heat cycling and after any repair. A newer phone is better sealed when new; it is not immune.

Wireless charging is more common

Genuinely useful after water exposure, because it lets you keep a phone usable through the 24–48 hour drying period without putting voltage across a damp port.

What still fails the same way

Pocket lint, facial oil in the earpiece slot, and torn diaphragms. None of these has been engineered away.

FAQ

Common questions

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
