Speaker up is the wrong orientation

The diaphragm's airflow alternates — it pushes out, then pulls in — so over a full cycle those roughly cancel. What produces net outward movement is gravity. Held with the grille facing up, every droplet you free has to travel uphill against its own weight, and most of it settles straight back.

Grille facing straight down, device tilted about 45 degrees, means the outward stroke is assisted and the inward stroke opposed. Liquid then runs off the casing rather than pooling beside the opening. This single detail changes results more than any setting.

How far up to turn the volume

70 to 80 percent, not maximum. Past roughly 80 percent the amplifier clips — the waveform peaks flatten and the diaphragm holds at full extension rather than travelling smoothly. The motion becomes a buzz rather than a pump, so effectiveness falls even as loudness rises. The voice coil also heats, raising resistance and reducing output further.

Getting the volume slider right

Start the tone playing, then adjust. Phones keep separate levels for media, ringer, calls and alarms, and pressing the rocker before audio plays usually moves the ringer.

Hold it away from your body

Clothing absorbs expelled water and can wick it straight back into the grille. Hold the device out over a surface rather than against yourself.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the rice trick work?

No. Rice is a poor desiccant — open moving air dries a device faster — and its starch dust migrates into the charging port, microphone holes and speaker grille, which can create a second problem on top of the first.

It is still muffled after several tries. Now what?

Stop. If three cycles produce no improvement at all, the cause is not blockage. Check the symptoms on our guide to when a sound tool will not help, and have the device inspected rather than continuing to run cycles.

Can this damage my speaker?

No. The frequencies used sit inside the range your speaker already reproduces whenever you play music, and the tool runs at moderate volume rather than maximum. The one genuine caution is earbuds: never run ejection tones into in-ear devices while you are wearing them.

How long should I run it?

Thirty to sixty seconds per cycle, repeated two or three times with short pauses. Running it continuously for many minutes adds nothing once the accessible liquid is out, and only heats the voice coil.

Should I set volume to maximum?

No. Around 70 to 80 percent is the practical sweet spot. Maximum volume on a restricted diaphragm produces distortion rather than more displacement, and adds avoidable stress to the driver.

What this cannot fix

Our tool is great for water and dust, but it cannot fix physically blown speakers or electrical damage.
