A speaker is a stiff diaphragm attached to a coil of wire sitting in a magnetic field. Current through the coil moves it; the diaphragm moves with it, pushing air. Audio is simply the pattern of that movement. Everything else about speaker cleaning follows from this one fact.
The diaphragm has to move air, so the enclosure cannot be sealed — it needs an opening. That opening is the grille, and it is among the least sealed parts of any phone. Water enters by capillary action; lint enters because a bottom-firing grille faces upward in a pocket.
Two effects combine. Material resting near the diaphragm adds mass, reducing how efficiently it accelerates. And material in the openings reduces the effective aperture, so less air escapes. The result is lost volume plus lost treble — but the diaphragm still moves, so sound never disappears entirely. That is why complete silence always indicates something other than blockage.
For a given drive level, diaphragm travel falls as frequency rises. At 150 Hz a small driver moves a comparatively large distance each cycle; at 15,000 Hz that movement is measured in microns. Travel is what pumps material out, so cleaning tones are low.
